Your Local Left Team In Hinkler

Since moving to Hervey Bay with my young family in 1990 I have been actively involved in the community, including the formation of the Hervey Bay branch of the Wildlife Preservation Society of Queensland and establishing the Yag’ubi Multicultural Festival. I have been a member of the Hervey Bay branch of our party for more than 20 years and was an inaugural member and Secretary of the Fraser Coast Labor Women’s Network. I have also served as Vice President of the Hinkler FEC and an FEC delegate. From 2001 to 2008 I worked as the Electorate Officer for Andrew McNamara, Member for Hervey Bay and Minister for Sustainability, Climate Change and Innovation. During that time I assisted local people, on a daily basis, with issues including housing, health, transport and access to various support services. I believe in strong, progressive policy to support Queenslanders and hope to be able to represent the views of our local branch members at state conference.

I love living in Bundaberg and the Wide Bay Burnett region. I chose to raise my three (now adult) children here and it's where we call home. In my life I've always gravitated towards helping people, whether it has been obtaining my Psychology Degree, or my career in the Queensland Public Service in Department of Communities, or being a Member of Parliament. As a member of the Labor Party I've previously held positions such as FEC and SEC secretary, and I'm currently Co-convenor of Labor for the Regions. To me, there is nothing more satisfying than working towards making life better for people, whether it's advocating for good policy, or marching alongside like minded people when needed. Without Labor I would not have had the opportunities I have had in life, and I want future generations to have those opportunities too.

Bundaberg has been my home for the past 17 years. My wife Theresa and I have raised our four children here with the two youngest now at high school.I started my teaching career in Bundaberg in 2000 and am now an Organiser for the Independent Education Union. I enjoy working with people and seeing our community grow stronger through all working together for the betterment of our area. That’s why I have been heavily involved with the many union activities in Bundaberg and coordinate the Bundaberg Labour Day march every year. I want to make sure that we have a strong voice representing our regional area. It is disappointing that so many of our youth today must move away from our local area to find work or training opportunities. We need to have policies and decisions made that strengthen and support our local community through the creation of jobs, training opportunities for our youth and access to affordable healthcare and services.

I have had the good-fortune of working alongside the passionate grass-roots and regional members of our party. Labor is strong in the regions, strong because of our members who stand passionately for what we believe. The outstanding efforts of our campaign teams and volunteers across the Bundaberg, Maryborough and Hervey Bay electorates prove that Labor people will always fight for their communities. Undertaking campaign and branch leadership roles has allowed me to experience and explore how the movement of our values can expand across the region. State conference is where we can all stand together through our representatives. We need to develop and implement policies that will generate and maintain local jobs, protect our precious environment, and ensure our communities have access to quality, publicly owned services. As a state conference delegate I will make sure that I represent the many voices of our communities, our cities and our region.
